Math Club is a free, afterschool math club on-site at elementary schools (currently we operate at Robert E. Willett Elementary, North Davis Elementary, and Pioneer Elementary, with a pilot program at Holmes Junior High). We run one-hour lessons once a week that are filled with engaging lessons, fun math games, and educational activities. More details about our inner workings can be found below.
Though we are high school students, we instead are affiliated with the elementary schools themselves. We have a system set up at all our schools in which we operate under permission and a charter granted by the school principal along with having all members sign the formal Math Club Honor Code.
We are not a homework club; our primary focus is to teach the students new and intriguing mathematical concepts, while also reinforcing fundamental skills. However, we are open to helping students who need help with homework if they happen to bring it.
Note: we are not affiliated with MuAlphaTheta, a math club for high school students on the Davis Senior High School campus.
Our lessons have shifted away from a traditional worksheet model to focus on the diverse avenues of education and learning styles of our students. Our lessons include visual, auditory, reading, hands-on, and writing elements.
We emphasize the joy in learning and try to make our lessons, whether it be a lecture, worksheet, or activity, to be as engaging as possible. Our instructors and guides do not just give the answers but help guide students through the path of learning, encouraging step-by-step progress. The large team also works one-on-one with students to give personalized help adaptable to each unique student, something not possible in a large classroom model. We also emphasize a question-based method that sees if students fully understand a concept and guide them to arrive to their own conclusions through critical and logical thinking.
On occasion, a guest lecturer will be invited to give an engaging lecture on some mathematical phenomena. Currently, professors from UC Davis have kindly come in periodically to give lectures.
Robert E. Willett Elementary school was where several of the founders went to school. Many of us had Ms. Cook and were inspired there. Now, we bring Math Club to the school and its students to continue to encourage students to go into the realm of math. While Ms. Cook usually hosts, Mr. Stephens is the current substitute supervisor.
North Davis Elementary school was where the team looked to next. A few of our members graduated from this school. We were able to get our club up and running with the help of Principal Pinto, Ms. Toy, and many of the other NDE faculty.
Pioneer Elementary school was where the team expanded to next in cooperation with Principal Sidhu and the PTA Chair Ms. Jen Revis. The club at Pioneer operates under the supervision of Ms. Yee.
Our Holmes Junior High school program was launched in October 2024 as a pilot program to look towards expanding not just to elementary schools but also higher levels of learning.
